The Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Hospital is using creativity to help heal its patients. As part of treatment, patients participate in dancing, listening to music, writing personal reflections or working with beads, clay or collages. Studies have found that being involved in these kinds of activities while in treatment help to reduce anxiety, shortens hospital stays and ease symptoms. (Source: "The Art of Healing," The Washington Post, 2004) In a study by Arts Council England, a majority of individuals (80%) who attend arts or culture events are more likely to report better health. As well, those who agree with the statement – the arts play a valuable role in my life – are also more likely to report good health.
